LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Lincolnshire & Waukegan, IL

Affirming therapy to help you feel seen, supported, and free to be yourself.

When you’ve spent years shrinking yourself to fit, it’s hard to remember what ease feels like. At Access Counseling Services, we offer LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy for adults, teens, children, and families, designed to help you feel affirmed in your identity and support you in building a life that feels whole, safe, and authentically yours.

“Why do I still feel like I have to hide who I am?”

You’ve done the work to understand yourself, but being yourself doesn’t always feel safe. You walk into a room and still measure how much to share. You laugh at jokes that sting just to keep the peace. You hold parts of yourself back, even around people who love you.

You’re tired of performing. Tired of choosing between authenticity and acceptance.

At Access Counseling Services, our LGBTQ+ affirming therapists help you quiet the self-doubt and build the confidence to live fully and unapologetically as you are.

What Is LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy?

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy is a space to understand yourself more deeply and untangle what’s been weighing on you, so that you can feel safe being exactly who you are. Whether you’re questioning your identity, healing from rejection, or just tired of hiding parts of yourself, therapy can help you find clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of self.

At Access Counseling Services, we offer affirming LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy for people of all ages through an intersectional, trauma-informed lens. You are shaped by many layers, like your gender, sexuality, race, culture, and lived experiences, and each of those parts deserves care and respect.

Our team draws on proven and effective approaches, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy, to help you manage emotions, build compassion, and strengthen the relationships that matter most. We also bring in mindfulness and practical skills to support you between sessions. We honor your pace to help you feel safer in your own skin, trust yourself again, and live in a way that feels true to who you are.

Common Challenges We Help With

At Access Counseling Services, we provide LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy for adults, teens, children,  and families navigating a wide range of emotional and relational challenges, including:

Identity Exploration & Affirmation

If you have been questioning your gender, sexuality, or sense of self, and want a space where you can explore freely without judgment, LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy offers support to explore and discover what feels most true for you.

Internalized Stigma & Minority Stress

Living in a world that doesn’t always affirm you can create shame and self-doubt. Over time, that stress can weigh down your confidence and leave you questioning your worth. Therapy helps you release those burdens and rebuild a sense of pride.

Family or Relationship Conflict

Rejection, misunderstanding, or lack of acceptance from loved ones can be deeply painful. We’ll help you process those experiences, set boundaries where needed, and build relationships grounded in respect and authenticity.

Trauma & Emotional Numbing

When you’ve been hurt, dismissed, or made to feel unsafe for who you are, parts of you learned to go quiet just to get through it. We’ll help you feel safe in your body again and gently reconnect with the parts of you that had to disappear for a while.

Anxiety, Panic, & Overwhelm

The constant pressure to monitor how you show up at work, in public, or within family spaces can be exhausting. In therapy, we’ll work on easing that constant tension, helping your body settle and your mind finally rest.

Depression & Disconnection

When you’ve had to hide parts of yourself for too long, joy can feel far away. We’ll help you reconnect with the parts of life that bring meaning and belonging, and remember what it feels like to be alive again.

Body Image & Self-Worth

Your body is part of your story, and it deserves compassion. We’ll support you in challenging negative beliefs, strengthening self-acceptance, and feeling more at home in your own skin.

Intersectionality & Belonging

Your experience is shaped by more than one identity. We honor the intersection of culture, race, gender, and sexuality, exploring how those layers affect your relationships, sense of safety, and self-expression.

No matter what brings you to LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy, we’ll meet you with care.

Approaches We Use in LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy

At Access Counseling Services, our work with the LGBTQ+ community is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and care. You’ll never have to hide here. Whether you’re coming out for the first time, navigating transition, or simply wanting space to breathe, our goal is to help you feel steady, understood, and proud of who you are.

Here are a few of the tools and therapies we commonly use:

DBT teaches skills for navigating emotions and relationships without getting overwhelmed. You’ll learn practical ways to stay grounded when things get intense, communicate your needs clearly, and find balance between acceptance and change.

TLDP helps uncover the patterns that show up in your relationships that have been shaped by past experiences, identity struggles, or fear of rejection. Together, we’ll notice these patterns in real time and begin creating new ways of connecting that feel more secure and genuine.

Every part of your identity matters here. We approach therapy with an understanding of how discrimination, rejection, and systemic barriers can shape your sense of safety and belonging. You don’t have to explain or justify who you are; you’ll be met with affirmation and care at every step.

We weave mindfulness and self-awareness into sessions to help you stay connected to your body and emotions. You’ll also learn how stress, identity-based trauma, and minority stress affect your nervous system, and how to calm it when life feels too heavy.

There’s no single roadmap for this kind of work. We’ll move at your pace, adjusting along the way to keep the process gentle, honest, and real.

Common Questions About LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy

Have other questions?

Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ clients have worked with therapists who didn’t understand or affirm their identity, which can make opening up again feel risky. Our approach is collaborative and transparent from the start. If something feels off, we’ll name it and work through it together. Your comfort, safety, and trust come first, and you’ll never be asked to minimize who you are.

Yes. While therapy can’t undo what you’ve faced, it can help you process the pain and make sense of it in a way that no longer controls you. Together, we’ll build resilience, strengthen your boundaries, and find ways to reconnect with the parts of yourself that deserve safety, love, and pride. You’ll also learn tools to navigate daily stress and protect your well-being in environments that may not always feel supportive.

Your identity isn’t one-dimensional, and therapy shouldn’t be either. We’ll look at how your race, gender, sexuality, culture, and other parts of who you are interact and shape your experience of the world. This lens helps us understand your story more fully, not to label you, but to help you feel seen in every layer of who you are.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions that last 45–50 minutes. Some people find relief within a few months, while others choose to continue longer for deeper self-understanding and healing. We’ll check in regularly about how therapy feels and adjust the pace to fit your goals and comfort level.

Not at all. You decide what feels safe to share and when. Some clients come in ready to talk about their identity, while others want to start with anxiety, relationships, or stress at work. Everything connects over time. We’ll follow your lead.

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we’ll ever do.”
