Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Lincolnshire & Waukegan, IL

Trauma-informed therapy to help you feel safer, stronger, and more like you again.

If you’ve experienced trauma, you know it doesn’t just live in the past. It shows up in your body, your relationships, and your sense of safety. At Access Counseling Services, we specialize in helping adults, teens, and veterans heal from trauma and PTSD, so you can live with more ease and fulfillment.

"How do I move forward when part of me is still stuck in the past?"

You go through the motions, but nothing feels the same. The laughter feels forced. The hobbies don’t spark anything. You’re not falling apart, but you’re not fully here either. You keep showing up for work, family, and friends, but inside you feel flat, numb, or quietly overwhelmed.

You miss the version of yourself that could feel lightness, hope, and connection.

At Access Counseling Services, our trauma therapists help you feel safer in your body, trust yourself again, and release the patterns that trauma left behind.

What Is Trauma & PTSD Therapy?

Trauma & PTSD therapy is more than talking through the past. It’s a structured, evidence-based process designed to help your brain and body fully process experiences that were too overwhelming at the time they happened. Whether your trauma was sudden or cumulative, recent or long-held, therapy offers a pathway back to safety, clarity, and connection.

At Access Counseling Services, we specialize in trauma & PTSD therapy for adults, teens, and veterans, using a trauma-informed lens rooted in the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model. This means we understand how trauma reshapes the brain and how, with the right support, the brain can heal.

Our team is trained in a variety of effective, evidence-based therapies, including EMDR, CPT, assessments, and mindfulness practices. We honor your pace and never rush your process. We’ll walk with you every step of the way, creating a path to healing that is safe, supportive, and personalized to your needs.

Types of Trauma We Treat

At Access Counseling Services, we work with adults, teens, and veterans facing a wide range of trauma experiences, including:

Childhood Trauma or Emotional Neglect

Early experiences of abandonment, criticism, or unmet emotional needs that continue to shape self-worth, self-trust, and relationships well into adulthood.

Complex Trauma (C-PTSD)

Prolonged or repeated exposure to relational trauma, such as abuse or emotional invalidation, that leads to chronic fear, shame, identity confusion, and emotional dysregulation.

Combat or Military-Related Trauma

Exposure to life-threatening situations or prolonged stress in combat zones can result in hypervigilance, survivor's guilt, emotional numbing, and difficulty reintegrating into civilian life.

Sexual, Physical, or Emotional Abuse

Being harmed or manipulated by someone in a position of trust can lead to lasting issues with boundaries, self-blame, intimacy, and fear.

Ptsd From Accidents or Violence

Sudden or terrifying experiences like car accidents or assaults can trigger flashbacks, avoidance, anxiety, and ongoing hyperarousal.

Medical or Health-Related Trauma

Distressing medical experiences—like emergency surgeries, chronic illness, or childbirth complications—can leave individuals feeling vulnerable, powerless, or anxious about their health.

Grief & Traumatic Loss

Sudden, complicated, or violent loss of a loved one may lead to emotional paralysis, guilt, or unresolved sorrow.

Relationship or Betrayal Trauma

Wounds caused by manipulation, abandonment, infidelity, or gaslighting can damage a person’s ability to trust and feel secure in relationships.

At Access Counseling Services, our trauma therapists help you feel safer in your body, trust yourself again, and release the patterns that trauma left behind.

Approaches We Use in Trauma & PTSD Therapy

At Access Counseling Services, our trauma therapy is personalized, collaborative, and rooted in evidence. Whether you’re processing recent trauma or experiences you’ve carried for years, our goal is to support real, lasting change. Our trauma therapists use proven approaches that help you regulate your nervous system, process trauma safely, and reconnect with your sense of self.

Here are a few of the tools and therapies we commonly use:

EMDR allows you to reprocess traumatic memories without becoming overwhelmed. Using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping), EMDR helps the brain release stuck responses and integrate new, adaptive beliefs about yourself and your experiences. The duration of EMDR therapy may be shorter than traditional talk therapy, depending on the type and severity of trauma.

CPT helps you understand how trauma has shaped your thoughts and beliefs, particularly around trust, safety, self-worth, and guilt. Through structured sessions and weekly practice, you’ll learn to shift from shame to self-compassion and from fear to freedom. In CPT, there are typically 12 sessions after the initial intake, and weekly homework is part of the process to help reinforce new ways of thinking.

Through intake assessments and ongoing feedback, we begin with a clear understanding of your needs and tailor your treatment to align with your symptoms, goals, and preferred pace. Structured therapies like CPT often involve a 12-session model, while others may be more flexible.

We incorporate simple, effective mindfulness tools to help you stay grounded in the present. Whether it’s breathwork, guided visualizations, or body scans, these practices reduce overwhelm, build awareness, and support nervous system regulation.

WET is a short-term, evidence-based approach that helps you process traumatic experiences through structured writing. Over the course of about five sessions, you’ll be guided to write in detail about your trauma, which helps reduce avoidance, lessen distress, and build resilience. Because of its brief format, WET can be a good option if you’re looking for effective support within a shorter timeframe.
EMDR Intensives offer a condensed format of EMDR therapy, with longer or multiple sessions scheduled over a short period of time. This allows for deeper processing without the interruptions of weekly scheduling. Intensives may be especially helpful if you want faster results, are preparing for a life transition, or prefer focused treatment over an extended weekend or a few days.

These approaches are not one-size-fits-all. We work with you to determine what resonates most, adjusting the process as needed to keep it safe and empowering.

Common Questions About Trauma & PTSD Therapy

Have other questions?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy involves recalling distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or alternating tapping. This process helps your brain “unstick” and reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge. EMDR is especially effective for trauma, PTSD, and anxiety. Over time, you’ll notice a reduction in emotional reactivity and a greater capacity to feel safe and grounded. For many clients, EMDR may offer quicker symptom relief than traditional talk therapy.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can show up in different ways, including flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, and sleep disturbances. You might find yourself avoiding reminders of what happened or feeling on edge for no clear reason. Therapy for PTSD can help reduce these symptoms, rebuild a sense of safety, and restore your ability to live more fully in the present.

Yes! Trauma-informed care, including EMDR and CPT can be done just as effectively through virtual therapy as in person. At Access Counseling Services, we offer HIPAA-compliant Telehealth across Illinois. Many of our clients prefer virtual sessions for the convenience, comfort, and accessibility. The choice is yours.
